IED Detonates on Steps Packed with Devotees; IM Mocks Security Agencies in Email
At 6:20 PM on 6 December 2010, an IED hidden inside a metal trash bin on the steps of Sheetla Ghat adjacent to Dashashwamedh Ghat exploded during the sacred evening Ganga Aarti, attended by thousands of pilgrims and foreign tourists.
A 2-year-old child, Swastika Sharma, was killed and 37 devotees were severely injured in the blast and resulting stampede.
Indian Mujahideen immediately claimed responsibility, demonstrating their persistent capability to penetrate religious gatherings despite recurring warnings.
