On 25 May 2013, over 250 armed Maoists ambushed a 25-vehicle convoy of the Congress party returning from a Parivartan Rally in the forested Darbha Ghati ravine of Sukma.
Maoists detonated landmines and fired over 2,000 rounds. Salwa Judum founder Mahendra Karma was dragged out, surrounded, and shot with over 70 bullets and stabbed with bayonets.
State Congress president Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, and former Union Minister V.C. Shukla were also assassinated in the massacre, exposing total security escort coordination failure.
